Sue Thompson, 73, of 118 Ohio St., St. Marys, died at 12:10 a.m. Tuesday, Feb. 28, 2012, at the Lima Manor Nursing Home.
She was born on Aug. 20, 1938, in Indianapolis, Ind., the daughter of Clarence and Thelma (Kent) Thompson, and they preceded her in death.
She is survived by her sister, Sharon Hoenie of Mendon; a niece, Shyla (Dan) Houser of Mendon; two great-nephews, Camdan and Ashdan Houser.
Sue was preceded in death by a great-nephew, Jordan Houser.
She graduated from Ohio Northern University in 1968 and earned a master’s degree in 1973 from Wright State University. She was a junior high language arts teacher from 1965-97 at the former McBroom Junior High School in St. Marys.
She also served as an adjunct professor at Wright State University Lake Campus, where she taught western civilization, history and developmental reading. She taught at Camp Inquire at Wright State University, a summer program for gifted learners and she was an Ohio Reads volunteer.
She was a member of the “Let’s Talk About It” book discussion group at the St. Marys Community Public Library, past president of the St. Marys Shakespeare Club, served as a state delegate to the White House Conference on Disabilities, served on the Ohio Committee for the Employment of People with Disabilities, a committee member of the Ohio Employment Bureau, Women’s Division and helped to establish the Ohio Women’s Hall of Fame and a member of the St. Marys Education Association, where she had served many offices, including president.
Funeral rites will be held at 11 a.m. Monday at the Miller Funeral Home, 1605 Celina Road, St. Marys, with the Rev. Bill Drummond officiating. Burial will follow at Elm Grove Cemetery.
Friends may call from 2 p.m. to 7 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home, where memorial gifts may be made to the Sue Thompson Memorial Fund.
