State Probes Official
WAPAKONETA — A complaint, the nature of which is not being released at this time, has been made against a long-time Wapakoneta physician.
Wapakoneta Police Chief Russ Hunlock told the newspaper this morning that a Wapakoneta woman made a complaint to his office about Dr. Tom Freytag at the end of May or late June.
“We received a complaint in regards to him and I felt due to him being the coroner and working with us, I needed to call in the BCI & I (Bureau of Criminal Identification and Investigation) to investigate,” Hunlock said. “We turned it over to BCI&I immediately.”
Hunlock said the complaint “has to do with the medical aspect of Freytag’s job,” but would not comment further on the complaint because he didn’t want to ruin the integrity of the case.
The police chief said BCI&I has given him no type of timeline on its investigation.
BCI&I Public Information Officer Jill Del Greco confirmed the agency is involved in the investigation and has been since late June at the request of a person with the Wapakoneta Police Department.
She said there is no time frame on the length of the investigation since they can all differ in the number of interviews needed to be conducted and the amount of evidence that could be collected.
If a criminal offense is determined to have been committed, Del Greco said the next step would to forward the case to a local prosecutor, who could handle the case himself or ask for a special prosecutor because of the appearance of impropriety or conflict of interest. BCI&I administrators would review the request and then determine if the prosecutor could continue or a conflict does exist.
At that point, a local judge would appoint a special prosecutor with the Attorney General’s Office to handle the case.
Freytag, who resides in Wapakoneta, was a physician at Lincoln Family Practice for more than 30 years and has served as the Auglaize County coroner for nearly 25 years.
Earlier this year he gave up his long-time family practice to fill a full-time position as occupational medical director within the Lima Memorial Health System.
An attempt this morning to contact Freytag at Lima Memorial Health System was unsuccessful.
In July, he was appointed to serve on the Auglaize County Health Board. Freytag, who has been honored by the state and a national organization for his work, also serves as team physician for Wapakoneta High School.
Along with his wife Gwynne, Freytag also has been actively involved in causes for the developmentally disabled.
