ST. MARYS — The St. Marys ACME baseball team added another doubleheader sweep to its late regular-season surge.

St. Marys emerged from a wild eight-inning slugfest with an 11-10 win in the opener and then made quick work of Delphos Jefferson with a 4-0 win in the five-inning nightcap.

The sweep lifts the St. Marys ACME team to 9-6 on the season as they now have three days off before the beginning of the ACME sectional tournament at Minster next week.

St. Marys earned the sweep with a victory in the five-inning second game behind a strong performance on themound by starting pitcher Mason Gross. Gross allowed just one hit to Jefferson in the second game in a five-inning complete game shutout.  He struck out two and walked four.

St. Marys jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first. Nate Vogel walked to start the inning, stole second, moved to third on a groundout and walked home on Tristan Becker’s RBI triple that made it 1-0.

St. Marys scored three of its runs after two men were out.

The lead extended to 3-0 in the third. St. Marys scored two runs on three hits, with all of it coming after the first two batters made outs. Mike Harbaum coaxed a two-out walk and Becker reached on an error on a fly ball to set the table. Isaac Fitzgerald singled home Harbaum. Zach Wilker followed with a single into shallow right to make it 3-0.

The final insurance run came in the fourth. Kyle Kiefer walked and came around to score on Vogel’s RBI triple into the right centerfield gap.

St. Marys won the extra-innings opener after the lead went back and forth throughout. The Riders emerged in the bottom of the eighth when Dirk Fenwick hit a hard chopper to third base that was mishandled, allowing  Marshall Lininger to scamper home for the walk-off win.
