St. Marys sweeps Minster to win ACME sectional title
MINSTER — After losing their opening game in the double-elimination Auglaize County ACME sectional tournament on Monday, the St. Marys ACME baseball team ran the table.
St. Marys slugged its way to the Auglaize County ACME sectional title by sweeping the Minster Wildcats in a pair of games on Friday night. The 10-1 and 15-4 wins for the Roughriders in the two championship round games finish off four straight wins over the past three days.
St. Marys advances to the district tournament next Wednesday against Anna at a time to be determined. Minster finished second and advances to play Fort Loramie on Wednesday at a time to be determined.
GAME 2 — ST. MARYS 15, MINSTER 4
Mason Gross went 3-for-3 with two doubles, two runs batted in and two runs scored. Jared Knous went 3-for-3 with a triple, two runs batted in and a run scored. Tristan Becker and Josh Young both added two RBI for the Roughriders.
St. Marys starting pitcher Marcus Wagner walked the first three batters in the bottom of the first inning. He escaped the inning without giving up a run and then went five solid innings giving up just two runs on two hits despite walking nine. He struck out seven.
Michael Hastrieter pitched two innings, giving up two runs on three hits in his second game out of the bullpen on the night.
Minster stranded 11 runners on base to end a frustrating day at the plate.
John Baumer drove in two runs for the Wildcats. Blake Ahrns and Derek Hogenkamp added RBIs.
GAME 1 — ST. MARYS 10, MINSTER 1
St. Marys forced a second game with a 10-1 win in the opener.
Brandon Coffey gave the Roughriders a nice start on the hill, working six innings and striking out six in the win. Southpaw Michael Hastreiter worked a perfect bottom of the seventh.
Nate Vogel sparked things from his leadoff spot by going 3-for-4 with two runs scored. Isaac Fitzgerald went 3-for-4 with four runs batted in and two runs scored. Mason Gross drove in three runs, with a key two-run single in the fourth inning.
St. Marys scored 10 runs despite stranding 14 runners on base in the win.
Minster’s Clay Brown went 3-for-4 with a double to lead the Wildcats at the plate.
