St. Marys splits at super tri in Wapak

WAPAKONETA — Celina rallied in the late stages of its match against the St. Marys wrestling team at Thursday night’s super-tri at Wapakoneta, earning a pair of key pins and a void in three of the last four classes to eek out a 36-34 win over the rival Roughriders.

St. Marys cruised to a 56-15 win over Kenton in its opener to go 1-1 on the night. Garrett Hower (tech fall), Eddie Reier (fall), Jaden Heitkamp (fall), Ryan Slife (decision), Chance Hicks (fall) won for the Roughriders. The Riders’ Justin Nedderman at 120 pounds, Austin Quellhorst at 126 pounds, Boston Hensley at 138 pounds, Jonathan Vogel at 152 pounds and Devon McCollister at 160 pounds all won via voids.

Celina found itself down 28-15 after St. Marys’ Ryan Slife pinned Anthony Martin at 182 pounds with five weight classes left, but Celina ran off four straight wins to grab a lead and the two-point win.

St. Marys' Justin Nedderman (decision), Reiner (fall), Hensley (decision), Heitkamp (decision), Devon McCollister (fall), Slife (fall) and Garrett Hower (fall) won for the Riders.

Celina won at 195 pounds in an exciting win in overtime for Celina’s Curtis Stillman over Spencer Knous. Knous came back from a 5-0 deficit to tie it up before falling in extra time. Celina’s Kevin Lockwood pinned Chance Hicks at 220 pounds, and a void at 106 pounds assured Celina of the win.
