The St. Marys boys basketball team started another game off sluggishly, spotting the Kenton Wildcats 10 points to start Friday night’s Western Buckeye League opener.

This time the Roughriders awoke from the slumber in time to pick up their first victory of the season.

St. Marys snapped its three-game skid to start the season and opened WBL play with a 55-48 win.

“It’s a win and we’ll take it,” St. Marys head coach Dan Hegemier said.

St. Marys’ victory means the Riders open 1-0 in the WBL for the first time since the 2005-2006 season.

Garet Fledderjohann scored 18 points — 11 of them from the free throw line. J.D. Meyer scored 17 points and D.J. Manning added 15 points for the Roughriders.

St. Marys rallied from a 38-34 deficit early in the fourth quarter. The Riders pulled ahead for good with four minutes left in the game on a Manning three-pointer from the left wing to go up 39-38.

The Roughriders went 22-of-32 from the free throw line on the night.

Brice Fackler, a 6-foot-4 senior, led Kenton with 21 points.

Senior guard Maty Mauk did not play. Mauk was on a trip to Missouri, where he is a quarterback commitment to the University of Missouri football program.
