St. Marys Lands New Business

March 28, 2012

ST. MARYS — A new resident will soon call The Shoppes at St. Marys home.

Superior Federal Credit Union of Lima announced plans to build a full-service location in St. Marys this year. President and CEO Phil Buell told The Evening Leader construction on the facility is expected to start by June with completion by October.

“We really follow our members,” Buell said. “Wherever we have a concentration of members, we try to put up a facility for them to use. We have about 800 members in that area and that’s what drew us down there so we could provide some service and some convenience for them.”

The new location will be built near Buffalo Wild Wings — in a center that has seen substantial growth in the past several years. Buell said the growth and visibility made the location attractive to company officials during their search.

“When you are close to major retail shopping and as individuals are out there doing their grocery and retail shopping on a Saturday morning, it’s good to be close to that so they don’t have to drive further,” Buell said. “Being in that area is what was a major draw to us to come to St. Marys.”

The facility is expected to employ five to six people with one person already on board. Buell said Phil Schumann has been hired to manage the new location. He currently has a leased office in downtown St. Marys. Once built, the St. Marys facility will be the 10th location in the company’s portfolio.

Buell also praised the work of Mayor Pat McGowan and Interim Safety-Service Director Craig Moeller during the process.

“These guys were wonderful,” Buell said. “They responded to our questions and they were ‘Johnny on the Spot’ in getting us information back and helped make the decision pretty quick to go down there.”

McGowan called the news a great addition to the city.

“We are absolutely ecstatic about it,” McGowan told The Evening Leader. “Craig and I have been working with them since my first or second week in office in helping them achieve their goal of moving to St. Marys. We are very pleased to add them to our community and it’s just one more jewel to put into the chest.”

In the meantime, the St. Marys location can be reached by calling 419-300-8980.
