ST. MARYS — The head of the athletic department for the St. Marys School District has stepped down.
Athletic Director Joe Bline issued his resignation Tuesday morning, effective July 31. Bline told The Evening Leader he accepted the same position for the Marysville School District. Bline's decision comes a few days after St. Marys Superintendent Mary Riepenhoff resigned to take a position with Race to the Top.
"It's closer to my family," Bline said, noting he is originally from Newark. "I am extremely happy and St. Marys is a great place. My kids and wife are happy here but it's too good a situation to pass up."
Bline came to St. Marys three years ago. During his tenure, Bline said he experienced a lot of highs with the Roughriders.
"There has been so much happen over the last three years," Bline said. "It's been really crazy from moving into the new school, the playoff run we had three years ago — that was a wonderful experience. I have been able to work with some great coaches and great athletes. I'd also be remiss if I didn't mention the girls soccer Final Four run, Makayla Breland going to the state track meet and the girls bowling team winning state this last year."
Bline said the opening was posted Tuesday morning. Members of the St. Marys Board of Education will be tasked with finding a replacement.
