SOFTBALL: St. Henry downs New Bremen in sectional final

May 9, 2012

NEW BREMEN — The New Bremen softball team ended its season losing to St. Henry 9-2 in the Division IV sectional finals.

In the bottom of the first inning, the Redskins cracked the scoreboard first when lead off batter, Ashley Heitkamp infield singled. Heitkamp then stole second and third and scored when Kinzie Stammen grounded out an RBI to third base.

The Cardinals offense tied the game up when senior, Kristen Miller had an RBI single to send classmate, Taylor Carter home.

St. Henry put up three runs in the second inning. Ally Mikesell platted Jenna Watercutter in her ground out RBI. Rachel Lefeld scored on an error by the Cardinals defense and Darcy Orick gave the Lady Redskins a 4-1 lead on her stolen base home.

St. Henry scored four runs on four hits in the fourth inning to take an 8-1 lead.

New Bremen picked up one run in the sixth inning when Carter scored on a passed ball. St. Henry answered in the sixth when Wattercutter had an infield RBI single to plate Kessen.

The Cardinals had one more shot in the top of the seventh to keep their post season alive but left bases loaded and couldn’t capitalize.

New Bremen started the season out with a record of 0-6 and in the last 19 games they were 10-9. The Cardinals lose five seniors, Chrissi Wisvari, Sydney Goens, Gina Griesdorn, Kristen Miller and Taylor Carter.

“Our kids have nothing to hang their heads about — we kept fighting,” said Craig Griesdorn. “We have come a long ways and our seniors will definitely be missed.”
