SOFTBALL: Riders open WBL with win; Cards and Cats put up big numbers

ST. MARYS 9, VAN WERT 4

VAN WERT — The St. Marys softball team opened Western Buckeye league play with a 9-4 win over Van Wert on Tuesday night.

The Roughriders improved to 3-4 on the season, 1-0 in WBL play.

St. Marys travels to Shawnee on Thursday for another WBL match-up, with the first pitch scheduled for 5 p.m.

NEW BREMEN 19, SIDNEY LEHMAN 16

SIDNEY — The New Bremen softball team scored a combined 12 runs in the game’s final three innings and emerged from a wild slugfest with a 19-16 win against Sidney Lehman on Tuesday night.

JulieBrown went 4-for-5 with a double, Gina Griesdorn went 4-for-6 with a double, Parker went 2-for-4 and Taylor Carter was 2-for-4 for the Cardinals. Chelsea Russell doubled for New Bremen.

New Bremen scored six runs in the fifth, two in the sixth and four in the top of the seventh to pull out the win despite giving up eight runs in the bottom of the sixth inning.


MINSTER 23, JACKSON CENTER 0

JACKSON CENTER — The Minster softball team put more than 20 runs on the board for the second tim this season in a 23-0 win over Jackson Center on Tuesday.

Minster’s Marissa Conrad went 2-for-2 with four RBI and a triple.

Hanna Floyd was 2-for-2 with a triple.

Kayla Richard earned the win in the pitching circle.

Minster’s softball doubleheader against St. Marys on Saturday has been postponed.
