Pitching and defense carried the day for the St. Marys softball team in its 6-1 win over Fort Recovery on Monday at K.C. Geiger Park.

St. Marys pitcher Lexi Roop dominated Fort Recovery, striking out 11 batters.

“She hit her spots,” St. Marys head coach  Sue Grothause said. “Her curveball is really working well. She knew she wasn’t on, but sometimes you aren’t on and you have to stay positive and push through it.”

St. Marys maintained a 4-1 lead and then tacked on two insurance runs in the bottom of the sixth inning on RBI singles by Paige Dicus and Schamp.

Fort Recovery scored first in the top of the first inning on a bases-loaded fielder’s choice groundout. But Roop then got a flyout to left field to keep the game at 1-0.

St. Marys responded with two runs in the bottom of the first when Roop’s sac fly to center field scored Schamp.

Shelby Goodwin followed with an RBI single to put he Riders up for good, 2-1.

St. Marys tacked on two runs in the bottom of the second to go up 4-1.
