SOCCER: L-B edges New Knoxville 1-0 in district semi

LIMA — New Knoxville’s record-setting season came to an end on Wednesday night, as Liberty-Benton edged out the Rangers 1-0 in a Division III district semifinal at Lima Stadium.

L-B’s Zach Garver scored at the 28:31 mark of the first half to score the match’s lone goal. The goal was Garver’s 30th of the season.

New Knoxville bows out of the tournament with an 11-5-1 record. The Rangers set records for team wins and goals scored in a season in 2012.

The Rangers were shut out for just the third time this season.

It’s the ninth shutout of the season for Liberty-Benton.

Liberty-Benton got eight shots on goal to New Knoxville’s four shots.

New Knoxville goalie Dean Frankenberg made five saves.

Liberty-Benton (14-3-1) advances to Saturday’s district title game against unbeaten and 10th-ranked Archbold at Wapakoneta at 3 p.m. Archbold won the regular season match-up between the teams, 5-1, on Sept. 27.

New Knoxville earned a trip to the district tournament after knocking off Fort Jennings 2-1 in overtime last Saturday. Liberty-Benton got to the district tournament with a 3-2 win over Lima Central Catholic on Saturday.
