Shelby County Sheriff Indicted On Sex Charge

WAPAKONETA — Shelby County's sheriff was arrested today on a sex charge.

In a news release issued to The Evening Leader, Auglaize County Sheriff Al Solomon said Shelby County Sheriff Dean A. Kimpel, 57, was arrested at 8:19 a.m. today on an indictment handed down by a grand jury. Kimpel was indicted on one count of sexual battery, a third-degree felony.

According to online court records, Kimpel was ordered held on a $100,000 bond with a 10 percent cash provision. Kimpel posted the $10,000 cash to secure his release. Online documents also indicate the alleged offense took place July 24, 2010. If convicted, Kimpel faces a maximum of five years in prison and would be subject to a sex offender status hearing.

Solomon said he is not releasing any further details of the investigation. The Bureau of Criminal Identification and Investigation handled the investigation.
