Shelby Co. Inmate Found Dead

SIDNEY — An inmate at the Shelby County Jail hanged himself early Monday morning.

According to a news release from Shelby County Sheriff John R. Lenhart, at 6:13 a.m., Ronald Walling was found hanging by a bed sheet in his cell during a routine inmate check. Jail staff immediately began CPR and paramedics arrived on the scene shortly after Walling was found. Walling was pronounced dead at 6:46 a.m.

Walling was arrested July 27 on two counts of gross sexual imposition and one count of attempted gross sexual imposition. Walling pleaded guilty to three counts of attempted gross sexual imposition on Nov. 14 and was sentenced to 45 months in prison on Dec. 12.

Walling was a convicted sexual offender and was labeled a sexually oriented offender and given a 10-year registration requirement related to an incident involving a female victim under the age of 13. Walling also had an outstanding warrant out of South Carolina for an alleged probation violation on charges of drug abuse and forgery.

The Shelby County Sheriff's Office and the Shelby County Coroner's Office are investigating the matter as a suicide.
