School Placed On Lockdown

November 15, 2013

ST. MARYS — An indirect threat prompted a local school to go on lockdown Friday morning.

At approximately 10 a.m., St. Marys Memorial High School and Middle School were placed on lockdown as a result of an indirect threat from outside the school district. St. Marys Superintendent Shawn Brown confirmed there was no direct threat made against any student or teacher.

"There was a possible threat outside of the district and as a precaution we did go on a full lockdown at the high and middle school," Brown told The Evening Leader. "We then went on controlled access at the primary and intermediate schools."

The lockdown was lifted at approximately 10:35 a.m. Brown said officials contacted the St. Marys Police Department to help in the matter.

"Through the cooperation with the police department and St. Marys City Schools, the threat was taken care of," Brown said. "We were able to resume our normal schedule and we appreciate all the cooperation. We will take every threat seriously and react accordingly. It's definitely better to be safe than sorry."
