ROUND-UP: Riders, Minster fall in softball action; Bremen baseball pummels Covington
SOFTBALL: ST. HENRY 4, ST. MARYS 3
ST. HENRY — St. Henry erased the St. Marys softball team’s 3-0 lead with four runs in the bottom of the fifth inning. The Redskins kept the score right there and defeated the Roughriders 4-3 on Monday night.
St. Marys led 1-0 heading into the top of the fourth. The Riders added a run in the fourth when Tannar Rutschilling reached on a fielder’s choice, Carly Carnes walked and Kiley Schamp hit a ball back up through the box for an RBI single.
St. Marys made it 3-0 in the top of the fifth. Harle Smith led off the inning with a walk. Lexi Roop sacrificed her over to second with a bunt. Two batters later with Shelby Goodwin at the plate, Smith scored from second on a St. Henry error.
St. Henry erased all that work in the bottom of the fifth. The Redskins took advantage of a Rider error, three wild pitches and had three hits in the inning.
St. Marys put a baserunner on in the sixth and went down in order in the seventh inning.
Lexi Roop took the loss in the circle for the Roughriders.
The Riders slipped to 4-7 on the season. St. Marys travels to Bath for a Western Buckeye League game on Tuesday at 5 p.m.
PARKWAY 6, MINSTER 2
MINSTER – One bad inning by the Minster Wildcats softball team allowed the Parkway Panthers to come away with a 6-2 MAC victory Monday evening at Four Seasons Park in Minster.
Parkway batted around in the top of the third inning scoring all the runs it would need.
Going into the bottom of the seventh inning Parkway pitcher Sierra Fent had a no-hitter and a shutout going but that changed in the seventh inning.
Jayden Hahn led off with a single to right and Regan Hahn drew a walk. Jayden Hahn stole second and third base and Regan Hahn stole second. Jayden Hahn broke up the shutout when she scored on a wild pitch. Following a strikeout, Kathy Prenger drew a walk and following another strikeout, Regan Hahn scored on a single to left by Marissa Conrad.
Minster starter Kayla Richard struck out 10 in the loss.
NEW BREMEN 24, COVINGTON 12
COVINGTON — Aaron Clune hit two home runs, Aaron McCollum drove in seven runs and the New Bremen baseball team smashed seven extra-base hits in a wild 24-12 win at Covington on Monday night.
Clune hit two home runs and drove in four runs for the Cardinals.
McCollum went 2-for-2 with a triple and drove in seven.
Alex Frideger went 3-for-5 with four RBIs and two doubles. Doug Kremer doubled, as did Ethan Elshoff.
New Bremen improved to 7-6. The Cardinals host New Knoxville on Tuesday night at 5 p.m. in a Midwest Athletic Conference game.
LCC 3, ST. MARYS 2
The St. Marys boys tennis team fell in a close 3-2 match to Lima Central Catholic on Monday night.
St. Marys’ third singles player Jason Freewalt earned a victory over LCC’s Dylan Niese, 6-3, 6-2.
St. Marys’ other win came at second doubles. The Roughriders’ Jacob Little and Tyler Parent earned a 6-3, 7-5 win over Zach Schroeder and Michael Shanahan.
In exhibition play St. Marys’ Ryan Wendel and Noah Hartsock defeated LCC’s Darrell Altman and Sean Daley, 8-1, in a doubles match.
St. Marys fell to 6-4. The Riders will travel to Lima Bath on Tuesday night at 4:30 p.m.
