ST. MARYS — Roller skating will return to St. Marys on Friday with the re-opening of Woodland Rollerdome.

Dan and Victoria Egbert recently purchased the roller rink on Celina Road, and while the rink will officially celebrate its grand opening in October, free hot dogs will be given to those in attendance at the 6:30 p.m. opening on Friday. Egbert noted the rink has received several updates in the past few weeks.

“We’ve added some new lighting, we’ve added some new sound equipment — just trying to update it (the rink) a little bit,” Egbert said.

Egbert said he hoped the rink will give area kids something to do and keep them out of trouble.

“To get more kids out here, not just from St. Marys, but from other areas and keep trouble out of the area,” he said. “I’d like to expand it sooner or later and add a few more things for kids.”

He noted that he would like to include a Halloween trail and a golf course at some point. Egbert said his enjoyment of skating growing up made him want to purchase the rink.

“We always came out here when we were kids — me and my family — and we always had a good time,” Egbert said. “I just wanted to try to keep it open. I saw it was for sale so I figured we’d give it a try.”

In addition to the regular skating hours, the rink will also hold some special nights.

“We’re going to be doing some late skates for the kids, some all-nighters,” he said.

Egbert plans to also keep the recreational activity affordable.

“We’re going to be having specials all the time,” Egbert said. “We’ll be handing coupons out around town. Something just to help them (the customers) out.”

Egbert said he is also open to working with local churches and organizations.

“I would like to put some fundraisers together for different churches or organizations around town that might be interested,” he said. “They can give me call. We’re willing to work something out.”

The rink will also offer specials for birthday parties.

“Birthday parties are what I really want to focus on,” Egbert said. “We’ve got birthday packages starting at $7 a kid.”

Starting in 2012, Egbert hopes to add Sunday afternoons to the regular hours of operation.

“We want to do a family fun day,” he said. “It’ll have cheaper admission for people getting out of church and want to bring their family.”

Egbert said Woodland Rollerdome is in need of experienced skaters to help as skate guards. Anyone interested can contact Egbert.

Woodland Rollerdome will be open from 6:30 p.m. to 11 p.m. Fridays and Saturdays and from 1:30 p.m. to 4 p.m. Saturdays. Admission is $6 and skate rental is $1.50 for regular skates and $2 for speed skates.
