Robert Lee Prater, 80

Robert Lee Prater, 80, of Vinton, (formerly of St. Marys) passed away on Tuesday, Dec.18, 2012, in Holzer Senior Care Center in Gallipolis.

He was born on Sept. 15, 1932, in Garrett, Ky., son of the late Hager and Laura (Ratliff) Prater.

He retired in 1970 after serving in the U.S. Air Force for 20 years. Following his service career, he was employed by the Goodyear Tire & Rubber Company as a quality control lab manager.  His memberships include Mercer F&AM Lodge 121, where he was past master and 50-year member; Scottish Rite in Dayton; Shiners’ Antioch Temple; Honorable Order of Kentucky Colonels; Ohio Eastern Star; and a life member of the VFW.

He enjoyed golfing, trap shooting, playing guitar and singing and spending time with his grandchildren.

Robert is survived by his wife, Doris Elizabeth (Farley) Prater.  He is also survived by his children, Robert Lee (Pam) Prater Jr. of St. Marys and Deborah (Robert) Otting of Minster; seven grandchildren, Kris (Natasha) Fischbach, Shawn (Jodie) Fischbach, Andrew (Laura) Fischbach, Kacie (Douglas) Jenkins, Samuel Otting; Matthew Prater Otting and Karly Prater; six great-grandchildren; brother, Ruben (Juanita) Prater and sister, Jackie Hicks.

In addition to his parents, Robert was preceded in death by his son, David Prater; two grandchildren and brother-in-law, Ballard Hicks.

Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Saturday in the McCoy-Moore Funeral Home in Vinton, the Rev. Chris Johnson, officiating.

Burial will follow in Vinton Memorial Park. 

Family and friends may call at the funeral home from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. Friday.

In lieu of lowers, the family requests donations made in Robert’s memory to The Shriner’s Hospital for Children, 1900 Richmond Road, Lexington, Ky., 40502.
