Robert L. Davis, 88, formerly of St. Marys, passed away on Saturday, Jan. 28, 2012, at HealthPark Care Center in Fort Myers, Fla.
He was born on Dec. 18, 1923, in Union City, to Robert C. and Miriam B. (Jobes) Davis, and they preceded him in death.
He married Marjorie Weimer, and she preceded him in death in September 1960. On Dec. 8, 1961, he married Mary M. (Gibson) Casler, and she survives in Fort Myers, Fla., where they recently celebrated their 50th anniversary.
He is also survived by two children, Mark A. (Sonya) Davis of Fort Myers, Fla., and Jolene Burke of St. Marys; four grandchildren, Douglas, Nicholas and Beth Burke and Rachel Davis; five great-grandchildren; a brother, James L. Davis of Union City, Ind.
He was preceded in death by three children, Carol Elaine Davis, Ronald L. Davis and Douglas L. Casler.
He was an industrial engineer at Goodyear, retiring in 1981 and was caretaker of the St. Marys Boat Club for 13 years. He was a 1941 graduate of Union City Indiana High School.
He proudly served his country in the Army Air Corps during World War II.
He served two terms as school board president of Auglaize School and worked along with the board and parents to get the new school and workshop built in the late 1960s.
He was a 32nd degree Mason, a member of the Scottish Rite Valley of Dayton, Mercer Lodge No. 121, St. Marys Chapter No. 51, St. Marys Council No. 81, Sidney Commandry No. 46, Ohio Priory No. 18, Knights of the York Cross of Honour and the Araba Shrine Temple of Fort Myers.
He loved the outdoors, camping, boating and fishing and shared this love with his family at every opportunity. The strength and character of this good and gentle man, especially during very difficult times, has left a lasting legacy with all who knew and loved him.
Graveside services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday at Union City Cemetery in Union City, Ind., with the Rev. Alex Hershey officiating.
Calling hours will be held from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. Wednesday at W.H. Dick & Sons - Hellwarth Funeral Home in Celina.
