Robert E. Bender, 49, of Shreve, passed away on Thursday, March 29, 2012, at his residence after a two-year, very strong battle with a rare cancer and most recently kidney failure.
He was born on Aug. 5, 1962, in St. Marys, to Robert Lee and Claudia (Goldenetz) Bender, and his father preceded him in death in 1999. His mother survives him in St. Marys.
In June 1983, he married Christine Unkel Bender, and she survives him in Shreve.
He is also survived by his two daughters, Alyssa Bender (Mike) Eikleberry and Teresa Bender, both of Shreve.
He went to St. Marys Memorial High School, where he graduated in 1981. He attended Ohio State University ATI in Wooster. While in the Wooster area, he met and married Christine Unkel Bender in June 1983.
Robert worked for a 1,100 acre, 200 cow dairy farm in Sidney, and while he was there, he and his wife also had their own Jersey Dairy Farm. Robert then moved back to the Wayne County area and worked for Ohio State University ATI as an assistant herdsman. He then worked for Kidron Supply Inc. in Kidron for almost 14 years, where he was service manager and also worked for Schmidt Service Now for three years.
He was very good at whatever he did. He really liked being in agriculture and working with farmers. He was a member of the Shreve United Methodist Church and had served on the Shreve Village Council as president. He was chair of the parks committee, where he put a lot of time in, helping to develop the Harold D. Miller Memorial Park.
Robert loved golfing with his family and friends, and he also enjoyed bowling with his friends. He was on a bowling team for several years. He enjoyed being outside in the warm weather and woodworking.
Both of his daughters played soccer while in elementary through high school; he enjoyed going to all their games an watching them play. He enjoyed going to the Indians games and watching sports with his friends, also.
A memorial service will be held at 4 p.m. Sunday at the Shreve United Methodist Church, where friends may call one hour before the service.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial contributions may be made to the Cancer Treatment Center of America, 2520 Elisha Ave., Zion, Ill., or to the Harold D. Miller Memorial Park, c/o Shreve Village Hall, 150 W. McConkey St., Shreve, Ohio, 44676.
