ST. MARYS — A local restaurant teamed up with a group of students to help fight cancer Monday night.

Beer Barrel Pizza hosted a benefit night for Memorial High School’s Relay For Life group Monday night. People who go to the restaurant on benefit nights can present their receipts to the group’s representative after dining and a portion of the money goes to support the group’s cause.

In the case of Monday night’s benefit, 10 percent of customers’ bills will go to support Relay For Life’s search for a cure for cancer.

“We do several benefits for Memorial High School,” Store Manager Carrie Huelskamp said. “A representative from the school talks to the community about coming here and eating (to support them) ... It’s great for the community to see that as much as (they) support us, we want to support them, too,” she said. “Tonight we’re expecting a big crowd.”

The tables and bar were abuzz with people, several of whom came specifically for the benefit night.

“We like to do it Mondays and Tuesdays because we have the pizza specials, and we’re usually slower — it brings people in,” Huelskamp said.

Three freshmen Roughriders sat together at a table, there just to support the school’s Relay For Life group.

“It’s just another way to help,” Amanda Godhino, 15, said. “It’s easy — we get to eat and we do it.”

Molly Dressman, 17, and a junior at Memorial High School, greeted customers at the door on behalf of Relay For Life and encouraged them to participate.

“This is our first time at Beer Barrel,” she said.

Relay For Life’s next event, the Polar Plunge, will take place on March 17. Beer Barrel will host another benefit night for the group on Feb. 25.
