Rider Takes Life In Stride

November 23, 2012

ST. MARYS — For senior Nick Durkee, his plans after high school are 75 percent certain.

He is not stressed about that 25 percent of uncertainty, but chooses to approach the future with a “whatever happens, happens” attitude.

“For now, I’m just planning on going to college for engineering,” Durkee said. “Wright State is my main option. I hope to run cross country there, too.”

Durkee participates in cross country and track for St. Marys, and is the top runner on both teams.  His favorite high school memory, he said, was finishing the 5K at the district competition in 16:36, which put him through to regionals.

Although running is definitely a passion for Durkee, he is a very active member of Wayne Street United Methodist Church,  and participates in the bell choir there.  Church and the choir are his main activities outside of school and running, he said.

High school itself is a “hate-love relationship,” Durkee said.

“I love to learn, but I hate coming to school (to do it),” he said.

His favorite teacher to learn from is Mrs. Johnson, for English I and II.

“(It’s an) insanely difficult class, yet it helped me a lot,” Durkee said.

Calculus, he said, was his favorite class, though.

“It was laid back, yet challenging,” he said. “I learned a lot and it helped me get a 3 on the AP test.”

One thing that has frustrated him about high school is that none of his friends share his passion for running for fun.

“I want to go out and do the 7-mile runs,” Durkee said. “There are others who (think) ‘a one mile run sounds good.’”

Durkee said he is eager to meet new people in college and hopefully make friends who share his interests.

While Durkee hopes to be able to find more diversity, he plans to stay at Wright State for all four years of college.

“I really would like to stay close to home,” he said. “I really like St. Marys — the small town feel. When I go to a city I just feel like I’m one in 8 million. It’s not really a good feeling for me.”
