Rider Active On, Off Field

September 21, 2012

ST. MARYS — During her time as a St. Marys student, Memorial High School senior Molly Albert has proven herself as a leader among her peers.

Albert, 17, is an active athlete who has demonstrated her leadership skills both on and off the field.

“I’ve played since my freshman year, all four years,” she said of her time on the soccer and the basketball teams. “I like all the rivalries we have ... I feel like our Celina-St. Marys rivalry, it’s just something special, and it’s something I always look forward to playing.”

Albert said she also enjoys her teammates on her teams.

“I all like all the teammates I play with,” she added.

In addition to playing sports, Albert is also involved in the Sportsmanship Committee, Girl Talk and DECA at school.

“I’ve been on the sportsmanship committee since my freshman year,” she said, adding her DECA activities, as well. “Last year, I did series, which is an individual competition. And Ashleigh Falk and I went to state last year, and we participated in Creative Marketing Project.”

While as a member of the Sportsmanship Committee, which Albert attends with five other St. Marys students, Albert networks with other WBL athletes.

“All 10 of us schools meet, and we meet at one of the WBL schools,” she said. “Last time we had a meeting at Wapak, and all 10 of the WBL schools got together and we had a speaker. It was actually the girl who was at the state track meet and another girl fell and this girl picked her up. Her name is Meghan Vogel, and she came and talk to us about how sports is about picking each other up and just being leaders, so that was cool.”

Albert noted this is the first year for Girl Talk, which is a mentoring program.

“That is our new mentoring program that’s run through the middle school,” she said. “Younger girls, they’re going through a lot of changes and stuff, and I think it’s important to help them understand what they’re going through and just be there to help them.”

Albert noted she believes her ability to lead sets her apart from other students.

“I’m a team captain for the soccer team and the basketball team, and then being on the sportsmanship committee,” she said as examples of her leadership.

Albert noted her favorite memories from high school so far, with both being made on the soccer field.

“Scoring the winning goal in the Bath game in double overtime and going to state in soccer my freshman year,” she said.

When she’s not in school, Albert takes her love of sports into the role of supporter, and she also works at Albert Sporting Goods on Spring Street.

“I love watching sports, hanging out with friends and snow skiing in the winter,” she said.

Albert said she admires her peers above all.

“I admire my friends the most,” she said.

Her friends, along with playing soccer and basketball, were what she noted she will miss when she heads off to college.

“The student section at football games and basketball games,” Albert said of what she likes best about being a St. Marys student.

While a St. Marys student, Albert complimented all of the teachers she has had over the years, noting a few of those who stood out.

“I have enjoyed all of my teachers, but some of my all-time favorites are Mrs. Ahlers, Mr. Ginter, Mr. Meinerding and Mrs. Lisi,” she said.

As for her advice to underclassmen/other students, Albert stressed enjoying the time in school.

“Have fun in high school,” she said. “It goes by so fast.”

Albert is the daughter of Lyle and Julie Albert. She has two older brothers, Zach, 21, and Tyler, 20, and a dog named Grady and a cat named Cassie at home.
