ST. MARYS – It was total domination Friday evening for the St. Marys ACME baseball team against previously unbeaten Wapakoneta.
St. Marys got the runs going in the third inning and defeated Wapakoneta 10-0 in five innings at K.C. Geiger Park.
“This season we have been very successful in executing in situations,” St. Marys head coach Alan Huber said. “Sometimes it has been with a hit, sometimes by making the pitcher work or by getting a couple bunts down and forcing some errors.”
It was a battle between two excellent teams as Wapakoneta came in at 9-0, while St. Marys was 7-1 and in the beginning it looked like it was going to be a good game.
“We were obviously excited about playing this game,” Huber said. “We knew they were 9-0 coming in and our guys wanted to prove that we are a good team too.”
“They hit the ball and you have to give them credit,” Wapakoneta head coach Willie Sammetinger said. “This team is a little different than past St. Marys teams because this team hits the ball.
In the first two innings neither team could generate any offense, but then St. Marys started forcing things in the third inning.
Nathan Vogel led off and reached on an error and went to second on a wild pitch. He scored on a single by Mike Huber and Huber advanced to second on an error.
Following a strikeout, Nick Vogel singled and both runners scored on a double to left by Brad Sawmiller. Sawmiller went to third on a balk but Steven Paulus popped up and Tyler Roby struck out to end the inning.
“We made four errors, a walk and a hit by pitch and all six runners scored,” Sammetinger said. “When you give them free passes like that good things are not going to happen.”
St. Marys blew the game open in the fourth inning with six runs as they batted around.
Sawmiller got the complete game victory giving up only four hits while striking out seven. He didn’t walk anybody but hit two batters.
“This is a game that we are capable of playing,” Huber said. “We scored 10 runs on nine hits and no errors and we had a great effort by Sawmiller on the mound. This is the kind of team we can be if we execute 100 percent of the time.”
Wapakoneta (9-1) travels to New Bremen Saturday and Coldwater on Monday, while St. Marys (8-1) travels to Indian Lake today for a doubleheader.
