COLDWATER — The New Knoxville volleyball team came out on top of an exciting fifth game to knock off state-ranked St.Henry, 25-15, 26-24,14-25, 19-25 and 17-15, in a Division IV sectional title match at Coldwater on Thursday.

“In the fifth set I was glad that they had the confidence in themselves,” New Knoxville head coach Jill Roode said. “In some big matches this year we haven’t come through and all the loses were to good teams and we have been in the rotation of how do we get past the top teams and I hope they take what happened tonight and how we played and carry it forward.”

New Knoxville started out like a house on fire winning the first two sets, but the St. Henry Redskins came back strong to win the next two sets to send the Division IV sectional championship match to a fifth and deciding set. The Rangers eked out a small lead and on the second match point Abby Rohrbach served the winning points.

Meg Reineke led the Rangers (16-8) with 12 kills. Rachel Leffel had 11 kills.

New Knoxville will face the winner of the Ada/Lincolnview match Tuesday at 6:15 at Van Wert in the District semi-final.

MARION LOCAL 3, NEW BREMEN 1

COLDWATER — The Marion Local Flyers got out to big leads in three of the four sets that they played but in the end they had to hold on to defeat a stubborn New Bremen Cardinal volleyball team 25-22, 25-21, 20-25, and 25-18 in the Division IV sectional championship held at Coldwater.

“Usually a good beginning to the sets set the tone for the match,” Cardinals head coach Theresa Jenkins said. “I can’t really be upset because I felt like the girls played hard in coming back. No matter what the score was they played hard.”

“When you consider our sectional we have state ranked teams playing each other,” Flyers head coach Amy Steininger said. “New Bremen has been state ranked this year so it is a tough opponent to begin with for us.”

Julie Brown led New Bremen with 18 kills. Devon Heitkamp added 11 kills and six blocks. Victoria Wente had nine kills.  Karli Jones had 37 assists. Tarynn Clune added 20 digs.

Gina Kramer led Marion Local with 13 kills.

The Flyers will play in the second match next Tuesday in the Van Wert district at 8 p.m.
