NEW BREMEN — A festive group of creatures has hit the streets of New Bremen as part of what has now become an annual tradition.

The Pumpkin People are officially out today in New Bremen, adding fall spirit to the storefronts around the village.

“There are already a few out,” Southwestern Auglaize County Chamber of Commerce Director Scott Frey said on Monday, noting a few of this year’s Pumpkin People. “First National Bank in New Bremen has Johnny Cash, the YMCA has Y Not Join, Homan Interiors has Woody, Gilberg Furniture has The Couch Pumpkin, Western Ohio True Value has Ned and Fred the Nut Brothers, Bolly’s has Coroner’s Cafe — You stab ’em, we’ll slab ’em, Fireside has Hell’s Kitchen Chop Block.”

Other participating businesses include: Platinum Auto Group, Minster Bank, New Bremen Eye Care, Hair Performers, ReMax Select, Pizza Hut, Alco, New Bremen Dairy Queen, La Piazza, Elmwood Assisted Living of New Bremen, New Bremen Massage and New Bremen Coffee Co. and Books Inc.

“I saw one go up Friday,” Frey said. “There were a few that went up this weekend.”

The chamber, along with the New Bremen Community Improvement Corp., sponsors the Pumpkin People.

“This is the third year we’ve done this,” Frey said.

“The village’s parks and recreation department came up with this idea. We decided to make a contest out of it.”

The businesses’ Pumpkin People compete for the title of people’s favorite — there are voting stations all over the village.

“People can go in all the businesses and vote for their favorite Pumpkin Person,” Frey said. “The winning business gets a $100 discount off its chamber membership.”

The voters could also snag a prize, he said.

“I will draw three ballots, and we’re going to give away three chamber gift certificates to the voters.”

Those gift certificates will be in the amounts of $50, $25 and $10.

“I will pick three out of all the ones collected and we’ll contact them and let them know,” Frey said.

He noted visitors can vote for their favorite character all week.

“We’ll collect votes on Monday, so the voting will end then,” he said.

Frey said the Pumpkin People attract numerous visitors every year.

“The first year we had people driving up from Dayton to see them because they were all over the media,” Frey said.

The businesses, he added, have looked forward to the Pumpkin People every year.

“The businesses take it very seriously, but they have fun with it,” Frey said. “It’s a fun way to get people out around the village.”
