Projects Begin To Wrap

October 10, 2012

NEW BREMEN — Councilors heard an update Tuesday night on several construction projects that are wrapping up around the village as the season comes to a close.

In his report to councilors, Village Administrator Wayne York reviewed the progress of the construction projects underway.

“Tumbusch Construction is working on the sanitary sewer in the alley on the south side of the Crown Education Center and continuing westward,” York told councilors at their meeting Tuesday night.

“That’s in progress.”

In addition, North Main street will be fixed up this month after getting torn up when the village replaced a problematic water main.

“Gavit Paving is tentatively planning on coming next week,” he said.

“The primary things to get will be North Main Street where we did the water mains – with that we pretty much destroyed the street and it already had problems with it anyway ... The other thing to pave is going to be the base course of asphalt behind the Lockkeeper’s House in that driveway. There’s some other odds and ends.”

Another group of blocks around the village are on the list to be resurfaced before the end of the season.

“We’re still waiting on Barrett to show up on the big resurfacing project, which is six or eight blocks scattered around town,” York said.

“Part of First Street is on that, part of Second Street is on that. We signed the contract on that in June, so they’ll be showing up sometime this month.”

Last month, councilors approved a resolution allowing York to enter into contracts to place the utility lines located downtown and in Lions Club Park underground, and York noted the agreements should be finalized soon.

“We’re trying to finalize an agreement with Frontier on the underground project in the downtown area,” he said. “Hopefully we’ll get that underway in the next few days.”

In other business, councilors:

• Approved the Sept. 25 meeting minutes.

• In his report to council, Mayor Jeff Pape noted this week is Public Power Week and Fire Prevention Week.

Pape also told councilors the village’s tax receipts are up 3 percent this year.

• Approved the third reading of an ordinance authorizing and increase in compensation for the mayor and for councilors, effective after re-election. Councilor Dennis Burnell voted against the measure.

• Approved the sharing of the cost of flash drives for students in the Exploration Academy with the Community Improvement Corporation.

• Approved, as an emergency, a resolution authorizing the village administrator to purchase repairs for the street sweeper from Lacal Equipment Inc. at a cost of $36,851.57.

• Noted the electric rate study presentation scheduled for 6 p.m. Tuesday. The presentation is open to the public.

The next regular meeting of the Village of New Bremen Council is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. Oct. 23 at the municipal center.
