Picnic Returns

July 26, 2012

NEW BREMEN — The 91st annual New Bremen Firemen’s Picnic will return to Crown Pavilion on Saturday, with a lineup of activities that offers something for everyone.

“We’ve tried to structure the picnic and the day to provide something for all ages to come out and to enjoy what we’ve got to offer as far as activities,” Jeff Utz, of the New Bremen-German Township Fire Department, said. “We try to make it fun for everybody.”

Festivities kick off at 7 a.m. Saturday with the sign-up for the Memorial 5K. The one-mile fun walk begins at 8:30 a.m., and the 5K begins at 9 a.m. The Whiffle Ball Round Robin kicks off at 10 a.m.

“We have the whiffle ball tournament for some of the over 18 folks,” Utz said, noting the tournament is open to both men and women over the age of 18.

The high school lift-a-thon starts at noon, followed by sign-up for the Junior Water Ball Tournament at 1 p.m.

“We are having the junior water ball this year,” Utz said, noting the tournament begins at 1:30 p.m. “We’re bringing it back this year after it was canceled last year due to the dry conditions. We’re able to bring it back this year for the younger kids.”

New to this year’s event, a group of area bands will take the stage in Crown Pavilion from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m.

“We are actually going to have a student band showcase that will feature local bands,” Utz said. “They are junior high-aged kids. There are four of them. They’re going to take the stage at 3 o’clock, and they will be playing a few songs a piece. That’s something new we’ve added.”

Corn Hole begins at 4 p.m., and at 4:30 p.m., free pony and inflatable rides open. A barbecue chicken dinner by Perfect Party Catering will be served at 5 p.m.

Utz said Tim Kuenning will again be doing wood carving throughout the day, with the auction beginning at 7:30 p.m.

Chez-Cheese will perform from 8 p.m. to midnight.

“We will have Chez-Cheese, which is the same band that we’ve had the past couple years,” Utz said.

A selection of food and beverages will be available throughout the day.

“We’ll be cooking up hamburgers and hot dogs all day, and, of course, there’s a lot of cold beverages for anybody that wants to come out and partake,” Utz said.

The New Bremen-German Township Fire Department holds the Firemen’s Picnic to raise money for various things needed at the department.

“It’s something that we, as a fire department, use as a fundraiser for the year,” he said. “It is our primary fundraiser, so we appreciate the support from the community.”

Firefighters and their families organize the event.

“It’s put on by the department and their families, so we use it not only as a fundraiser for us, but also as something fun for the community,” Utz said. “We try to get everybody out to enjoy the nice weather and say thanks to the community for their support. We appreciate anybody that comes out and attends and helps support the department, and that’s why we do it every year and that’s why we put as much time and effort into it as we do.”
