Patricia A. Kemp, 79, of DeTour Village, Mich., passed away on Friday, Aug. 24, 2012, at Cedar Cove in Cedarville, Mich.
She was born on Dec. 24, 1932.
Pat grew up in Jackson, Mich., and attended Albion College, where she earned her first bachelor’s degree.
She married Barrett Kemp, who survives in St. Marys, in June 1956.
She is survived by their two children, Becky (Ed) Harruff of New Bremen and Buz (Renee) Kemp of DeTour Village, Mich. She is also survived by her two grandchildren, Lydia and Bart, and two great-grandchildren, Scout and Remi. She was preceded in death by her adoptive parents, Lloyd and Elgie Wolfe.
Always one in pursuit of knowledge, she later earned multiple bachelor’s degrees from Wayne State University in Michigan and from Wright State University, along with her master’s in education. After retiring from the school system in Ohio, she became principal of the DeTour area schools and worked for the state of Michigan Department of Corrections as a counselor.
Pat was a self-taught pianist and organist who volunteered her talent in the church and community.
She also volunteered for the rescue dog organization.
A private gathering honoring and celebrating her life was held on Tuesday at her home, with the Rev. Judy Arnold officiating the service.
In honor of Pat, the town of DeTour is setting up a scholarship fund for music in her name for those students continuing their education in music.
