Park Sees Flurry Of Visitors

June 23, 2011

ST. MARYS — A new addition to K.C. Geiger Park should be open for play in the coming weeks.

During a parks and recreation meeting earlier this year, a group of residents inquired about the feasibility of installing a frisbee golf course at K.C. Geiger Park. St. Marys Safety-Service Director Tom Hitchcock green-lit the plan and said he expected the course to open soon.

“I talked with them the other day and they said maybe they will be up and running in about three weeks,” Hitchcock said. “They are just getting the baskets painted, which had been donated to them. They are going to have volunteers come in and install them.”

The course will be set up behind the snow hill to the north. Hitchcock said it will meander through the woods.

“It’s really not useful grounds for anything,” Hitchcock said. “It’s kind of a perfect fit for it out there.”

Hitchcock also praised the dedication of the group of volunteers who decided to install the course.

“It’s another amenity for the people to enjoy,” Hitchcock said. “And the really neat thing about this project is that all the individuals involved are not St. Marys residents. How often do you have people from other communities wanting to improve your community?”

Another attraction also is bringing visitors into the park. More than 2,000 people have played a round at the new miniature golf course since it opened in May.

“We knew it would be popular just because of the low prices,” Hitchcock said, noting it costs $2 for people 13 and older and $1 for 12 and under. “We really even haven’t advertised it much.”

The course is operated by service groups in the community that retain a portion of the proceeds. Hitchcock called it a win-win for the city.

“We are pleased with all the positive comments we have received,” Hitchcock said. “There are groups using it during the day — nursing homes, TLC, Auglaize Industries, the council on aging and Capabilities.”
