Otterbein Gets Into Holiday Spirit

December 12, 2011

ST. MARYS — A local retirement community rolled out its holiday decorations this weekend for its annual holiday open house.

Otterbein Senior Lifestyle Choices was open to the public for a holiday open house Sunday afternoon, showcasing its decorative campus and active residents. Attendees had the opportunity to tour the campus, including the health center and a patio home dressed in their holiday décor, shop the arts and crafts table, with handmade crafts made by Otterbein residents, snack on some  holiday hors d’oeuvres and punch and enjoy Christmas music, played on the piano by an Otterbein resident.

Marketing Director Rita Hilty said the annual event enables Otterbein to reach new people who may be interested in the campus.

“It’s a wonderful time for people to come in and see what Otterbein is all about,” Hilty said.

She noted the residents at Otterbein were heavily involved in the open house. Residents helped serve the food and drinks, made crafts to sell and one resident provided a mix of holiday music on the piano. She said the residents enjoy getting involved in the event.

“Our residents are really hands-on, and they love to participate,” Hilty said. “They are our best ambassadors for Otterbein.”

Resident Life Coordinator Cheryl Moor said among the many handmade crafts for sale at the event were two popular items.

“We have homemade noodles and homemade fudge,” she said. “They’ve become a staple.”

The craft table also displayed area school football lights and towels, among other items.

Hilty said she enjoys having the open house each year.

“I love having the opportunity to meet new people and show them just how wonderful Otterbein is,” she said.

For anyone unable to attend the open house, Hilty said tours are available and encouraged anyone interested to stop by the facility.

“I encourage anyone that would like to come see the campus to just come in,” she said.
