ST. MARYS — A local chapter of the Relay for Life will start the new year with a celebration this weekend.
The Relay for Life of Southwestern Auglaize County will host its Kickoff Birthday Party from 6 p.m. to 10 p.m. Saturday at Varsity Lanes in St. Marys. Relay for Life Committee Member Jackie Speckman said the group is hosting the event to get area residents ready for Relay for Life, which will be held June 15 and 16 at Skip Baughman Stadium.
“It’s our kickoff to start the year and get everybody that is already on a team motivated and get them going,” she said.
“It’s also for anybody that’s had any type of cancer in their life to come out and celebrate and just get the year started off right.”
Admission for the event is $10 for adults and $6 for children under age 12 and will include unlimited bowling, shoe rental and food.
“There will be a pizza buffet and soft drinks set out,” Speckman said.
Team packets and member packets will be available at the event. She noted that information will also be available for those who do not already have a team.
“Anybody that is interested in being on a team, we will have laptops out there to get them singed in online to the Relay for Life website,” Speckman said. “Anybody who’s interested in creating a team, we can also do that online. For anybody that just doesn’t know what the Relay for Life is about and what they do, we will have general information.”
For anyone interested in getting more involved with Relay for Life, Speckman said there are seats available on the committee.
“We also still have a couple committee spots open that if anyone is interested in stepping up and being on our committee, we will have that information available,” she said.
The event has been sponsored by several area businesses, Speckman said.
“I have numerous sponsors throughout the St. Marys, New Bremen, New Knoxville, Minster area who have donated to help cover the bowling portion of it to keep the ticket price down for anybody that wants to come out and have fun and enjoy themselves,” she said.
She noted she is thankful for the support the Relay for Life of Southwestern Auglaize County has received.
“Everybody that I have contacted to be a sponsor to help support this has been tremendously helpful and I thank everyone for the help I’ve gotten so far,” Speckman said.
Speckman said the event provides an opportunity for area residents to show their support for those with cancer.
“To show their support for anyone that has had cancer or to show support in general to find a cure for cancer,” she said of why the community should come out for the event. “It doesn’t have to necessarily affect yourself or a family member. It could be a friend or a neighbor. Cancer affects anyone. Basically, we’re trying to get the word out and get more people involved. Celebrate the ones that are surviving and remember the one who have passed is basically what we’re trying to do this for.”
