Norman U. Menker, 82

Norman U. Menker, 82, of St. Marys, died at 5:20 a.m. Wednesday, Sept. 26, 2012, at Otterbein – St. Marys.

He was born on Aug. 6, 1930, in Dayton, to Alvin and Anna (Heitbrink) Menker, and they preceded him in death.

On July 2, 1955, at St. Michael’s Catholic Church in Fort Loramie, he married Rosemary T. Albers, and she preceded him in death on Nov. 24, 2011.

He is survived by eight children, Terri (Dale) Whetstone of St. Marys, Chris Freewalt of St. Marys, Rob (Jane) Menker of St. Marys, Kathy (Tom) Bruggeman of St. Marys, John (fiancee Kristina Renfro) Menker of St. Marys, Mindy (Dave) Wilkinson of Westerville, Trisha (Shawn) Gibson of Columbus and Andrew (Amy) Menker of St. Marys; 23 grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; four siblings, Alfrieda Backs of St. Marys, LaVern Menker of St. Marys, Marilyn (Don) Schmitmeyer of Minster and Eugene (Nan) Menker of Allen, Texas.

He was preceded in death by a sister, Virginia Schneider.

He was a veteran of the U.S. Army, having served during the Korean War.

He retired from Beatrice Foods Co. in New Bremen, where he was a truck driver. In earlier years, he also worked at Goodyear Tire & Rubber Co. and Weston Paper Mill, both in St. Marys.

He was a member of Holy Rosary Catholic Church, Knights of Columbus Council 1592, Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 9289, American Legion Post 323 and Eagles Lodge Aerie 767, all in St. Marys.

Norman was a loving and devoted husband, father and grandfather. His favorite pastimes included carpentry, woodworking and fishing. He also was fond of his canine companion, Tiny. Above all, Norm liked spending time with his grandchildren.

A Mass of Christian burial is scheduled for 10 a.m. Saturday at Holy Rosary Catholic Church, 511 E. Spring St., St. Marys, with the Rev. Barry Stechschulte officiating. Burial, with graveside military rites, will follow at Gethsemane Cemetery in St. Marys.

Visitation will be held from 2 p.m. to 8 p.m. Friday and from 8:30 a.m. to 9:30 a.m. Saturday at Miller Funeral Home, 1605 Celina Road (Ohio 703 West Chapel), St. Marys.
