Nina Louise Phillips Guigou, 90
Nina Louise Phillips Guigou, 90, of Valdese, N.C., passed away on Tuesday, Feb. 12, 2013, at Joint Township Memorial Hospital, St. Marys.
Louise was born to the late Everett Leon and Edna Greene Phillips on Jan. 15, 1923, in Bakersville, N.C. She graduated from Spruce Pine High School in 1939, and at 16 years old began her studies at Mars Hill College.
Louise went on to Meredith College, where she earned her teaching degree. She was a certified teacher, primarily teaching French and English at schools in Valdese, Madison County, and McDowell County, North Carolina. Louise also was an accomplished pianist and taught many students piano lessons in her home.
She married John Harvey Guigou on July 1, 1950, at the Bakersville Methodist Church, Bakersville, N.C., and moved to Valdese with her husband, where they raised a family and lived their entire married life.
Both she and John Harvey enjoyed the community in Valdese as well as the Waldensian Presbyterian Church, where Louise was very active in the church choirs.
John Harvey preceded her in death on June 13, 1988. She was also preceded in death by two brothers, Lawrence Phillips and Guy Phillips, and her sister Mary Hutchins. She is survived by two siblings, Kenneth (Sue) Phillips of Winston-Salem, N.C., and Bruce (Helen) Phillips of Bakersville, N.C. Louise’s family showed her much love and care throughout her life, and that she always appreciated.
Louise is survived by two sons, Harvey Louis (Teresa) Guigou of New Knoxville, and Kevin (Sara) Guigou of Vandalia. Louise always took great pleasure in being with her four grandchildren, and three great-grandchildren, Grant (Amelia) Guigou with Jackson and Bette; Micah (Saira) Guigou with Levi; Stephanie (Ryan) Davis; and Dottie (Matt) Tompary.
The family would like to thank the staff at Otterbein Retirement Center in St. Marys for their loving care for “mom” and “grandma” during her residency there.
A service will be held at Heritage Funeral Home, 1507 West Main Street, Valdese, N.C, at 2 p.m. March 2. A visitation for family and friends precedes the service beginning at noon.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that any memorial expressions of love be contributed in her memory to the Waldensian Heritage Museum, Valdese, N.C.
