New Knoxville Gifted Flag
NEW KNXOVILLE — A flag that once flew over a sortie in Afghanistan is now on display in the New Knoxville Village Administration Building.
Norma Schroer, of Operation New Knoxville Cares (ONKC), visited with New Knoxville Village Councilors Tuesday night to present a flag from a local veteran and a certificate from the Alpha Company of the St. Marys Guard Unit.
“Operation New Knoxville Cares would like to present this American flag, flown over Afghanistan during a sortie, to be permanently on display here in the town hall,” Schroer said. “It was given by Scott Dull-Huttis, nephew of Gary and Sylvia Katterheinrich. ONKC sent care boxes to Scott during two of his deployments.”
The items are on display, she said, to honor all who contributed to ONKC.
“We wanted these displayed here in the town hall not only to honor the military, but to honor the businesses, churches, organizations and service groups who have supported us in many ways, and most of all, to honor all the faithful volunteers that have donated their time month after month to make this a successful project for going on five years,” she said.
Mayor Keith Leffel thanked Schroer for the items.
“On behalf of the council and New Knoxville, I would like to say thank you to your group because it’s amazing — 1,400 boxes in five years,” he said. “I know it’s not just a New Knoxville thing, I know it spans to many churches, businesses in other communities, but it was started by your group and you guys continue to do it. I think that’s something to be very proud of. It’s another example of what small communities can do.”
Leffel noted the items will be on display in the case during normal business hours.
In his report to council, Village Administrator Rex Katterheinrich said work is continuing on the drainage in the village and on the shed in the park.
“We are doing some work on the white shed out at the park,” Katterheinrich said. “That’s going along very well. The drainage work that we have been able to do so far this spring — I checked everything out this morning — everything has been a very positive step in the right direction.”
In other business, councilors:
• Approved the meeting’s agenda.
• Approved the April meeting minutes.
• Approved a pay ordinance.
• Approved a then and now purchase order for utility truck equipment for $4,798.46 for repair of a digger truck.
• Thanked all those who helped with the New Knoxville Garden Club recycling.
The next regular meeting of the Village of New Knoxville Council will be held at 7:30 p.m. June 12 at the village administration building.
