NEW KNOXVILLE — The New Knoxville girls basketball team went to the half down a point and ended up with a runaway win. A 21-0 run to end the game will do that.

The Rangers scored all 19 points in the fourth quarter in a 59-34 Midwest Athletic Conference victory over Delphos St. John’s at The Barn on Thursday night.

New Knoxville’s turned up the defense in the second half, causing eight turnovers and Paige Lehman and Haley Horstman combined for 22 second-half points.

“We turned it up a bit,” New Knoxville head coach Tim Hegemier said. “We switched some defenses up to give them a different look and did a little trapping just to get us going.”

New Knoxville improved to 7-4 and 2-2 in the MAC, but it took a big second half as the Rangers watched a 17-8 first quarter lead melt into a 26-25 deficit at the intermission. The Blue Jays outscored the Rangers 17-8 in the second quarter.

“We came out flat in the first half,” Hegemier said. “We were playing token defense...You’ve got to give Delphos credit, they shot the lights out in the first half.”

New Knoxville took the lead for good with about two minutes left in the third quarter on a Lehman putback that made it 34-33 in favor of New Knoxville. Lehman added two straight baskets and Kenzie Schroer put in another bucket as New Knoxville led 40-35 going into the fourth.

Lehman scored 13 of her game-high 17 points in the second half, hitting six of seven shots from the floor.

Meg Reineke had 15 points, keeping the Rangers close in the first half with 11 of New Knoxville’s 25 points. Haley Horstman added 12 points for the Rangers, with nine of those coming in the second half.

Sydney Fischbach led Delphos St. John’s with 13 points and Emilie Fischbach had 12 points.
