ST. MARYS — Hungry residents looking for a place to get a home-cooked meal have a new option.

Kate’s Kitchen, 810 S. Wayne St., St. Marys, opened its doors Wednesday at the former location of the Knotty Pine. For owners Dennis and Kathy Burden, owning the restaurant is a dream come true.

“It’s been her lifelong dream to open up a restaurant,” Burden told The Evening Leader as his wife was busy cooking in the kitchen. “So that’s what we did.”

The Burdens, who live in St. Marys, have been planning the opening for approximately two months. An issue with a natural gas line caused a minor delay in opening the restaurant.

“We had to get a bigger gas line put in,” Burden said, noting the new line is almost three times the size of the old line. “So that held us up for two weeks.”

Home-style offerings like hamburgers, mozzarella sticks, salads and subs dot  the menu at Kate’s Kitchen. Other options include a Firehouse Burger that features jalapenos and spicy mayo, as well as a Sizzlin’ Hellfire Steak Sub with pepper jack cheese, jalapenos and spicy barbecue sauce. The eatery also has a breakfast menu and will offer a Sunday buffet from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m.

“It’s a lot of work,” Burden said. “There is a bunch of work that goes into opening a restaurant.”

Burden said he hopes patrons enjoy the food and atmosphere at Kate’s Kitchen.

“I just hope it keeps going and we keep having good food,” Burden said. “We’ll do the best we can to make the people happy.”

During lunch Wednesday, a large crowd gathered in the main dining room. The restaurant offers local business delivery for lunch as well as a to-go menu for pick up.

Kate’s Kitchen will be open from 6 a.m. to 9 p.m. Monday through Saturday and from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. Sunday. More information on the eatery also can be found at Facebook at or by calling 419-300-8338.
