NEW BREMEN — For two and a half quarters the New Knoxville Rangers managed to stay with the Anna Rockets, but in the last four minutes of the third quarter the Rockets outscored New Knoxville 12-5 and defeated the Rangers 56-37 in the first game of the annual New Bremen Tip-Off Classic held at New Bremen.

In the nightcap the host New Bremen Cardinals used a 5-0 run in the last forty seconds of the third quarter to hold off the Van Buren Knights 49-37.

“The girls played hard tonight,” Cardinals head coach Randy Eckert said. “That is the big thing. We had a couple of lapses where they got a little complacent, but when it came down to crunch time they came through.”

On Saturday night it will be the Rangers against the Knights in the consolation game at 6:30 and the Cardinals against the Rockets in the championship game.

Ashley Frohne paced the way for the Rockets with 18 points and 10 rebounds, while Tiana Heidt was the only scorer in double figures for the Rangers with 12 points and eight rebounds.

“It was good to get a victory in the first game,” Eckert said. “The key to the game is keeping control of the tempo and not have so many turnovers we will be okay.”

Tropf led Van Buren with 21 points and Arbaugh had 12 rebounds, while Kyla Otting led New Bremen with 16 points.
