COLDWATER — With a 53-yard interception return for a touchdown the Coldwater Cavaliers put away the New Bremen Cardinals in a close contest 30-21 Friday night at Coldwater.
“Our quarterback (Elliott Westerbeck) played his best game tonight,” Cardinals head coach Rob Messick said. “At the end in desperation time he threw a couple of interceptions, buthe played really good football.”
Westerbeck threw for 271 yards and two touchdowns and ran for another touchdown.
The Cardinals created a few chances in the fourth quarter. Trailing 23-7 going into the quarter, New Bremen scored on a three run touchdown with 10:27 left. A pass by Westerbeck to Aaron Clune for two points closed the score to 23-15. The touchdown run was set up by a 37-yard pass from Westerbeck to Ben Chaney.
After the kickoff, Coldwater had a second and eight and fumbled the ball with New Bremen recovering at the 42 with 8:43 left.
The Cardinals took advantage driving the ball down to the 18, but a sack put New Bremen in a third and 22 at the 30. Once again Westerbeck came through with a touchdown pass to Clune. The pass for two to Clune was no good making the score 23-21 with 4:34 left.
The Cardinals had one last chance when the Cavaliers fumbled the ball at the Cardinal three and New Bremen recovered with 1:14 left. After a facemask penalty against the Cavaliers, Westerbeck completed a 13-yard pass to Alec Frideger, but his next pass was intercepted by Caleb Siefring who brought the ball back for a 53-yard touchdown. The kick was good by Troy Otten to make the final score 30-21.
“This was the best that we have played in a while,” Messick said. “We played very well and did some good things. Things are really bleak because we are 0-9, but the kids played hard and worked hard.”
Neither team scored in the first quarter, but Coldwater struck first in the second quarter. New Bremen had a breakdown after forcing the Cavaliers to punt when Clune fumbled the ball and Jordan Chapin recovered at the Cardinal 17. Two plays later Austin Bruns scored on an 8-yard run. The kick made the score 7-0 with 10:32 left.
“We just wasted too many chances,” Coldwater head coach Chip Otten said. “We get down to the five and fumble the ball. We had three or four turnovers again and we can’t have that.”
Following another Cavalier punt, the Cardinals started at midfield and after an 18-yard pass to Troy Williams, Westerbeck completed a 32-yard pass to Ben Chaney for a touchdown. The kick by Clune tied the score at 7-7 with 5:20 left.
“Ben Chaney had a hell of a game tonight,” Messick said. “We never had a running game, but we knew that going in.”
Chaney had nine receptions for 188 yards and a touchdown.
Coldwater scored with 2:32 left in the first half on a 29-yard pass from Bruns to Siefring. The kick made the halftime score 14-7.
In the third quarter Coldwater received the kickoff but Clune intercepted a Bruns pass at the 3 with 11:04 left. Two plays later Westerbeck was tackled in the endzone for a safety making the score 16-7 with 10:15 left.
Coldwater got the free kick but was stopped on fourth down with the Cardinals taking over at the 48 with 8:21 left. New Bremen took the ball down to the 40 but a fourth down run by Westerbeck came up one yard short with six minutes left.
Following a punt by both teams, Coldwater hit a big 57-yard touchdown pass to Chapin making the score 23-7 after three quarters.
“The defense played a hell of a game,” Messick said. “We just had a couple things that we didn’t get done and it hurt us.”
The Cardinals conclude their season next Friday at home against Delphos St. John’s, while Coldwater (7-2) travel to Minster.
