ELIDA — After 80 fruitless minutes, the St. Marys boys soccer team wasted little time in overtime to keep its postseason run going.
Zac Nelson booted the Roughriders into the district title game with a golden goal a little more than a minute into extra time on Wednesday night, and the Roughriders defeated the Bryan Golden Bears 1-0 in a Division II district semifinal.

Both teams battled to a scoreless tie in 80 minutes of play necessitating a 15-minute overtime golden goal period. It didn’t take very long as Nelson put the ball past the Bryan goalkeeper in the right corner of the net 1:14 into the overtime period.
“Zach Lemmerman had the ball and I think he was going to take off with it,” Nelson said. “I called it and he touched it. I took a touch and I looked back post and it was open. I hit it and it went in.”
The Roughriders mobbed the First Team All-WBL selection near midfield while Bryan players fell to their knees.
Before the overtime St. Marys head coach Dave Ring told his team, “I need a hero.”
“Well, I got one,” Ring said. “That’s what a captain is supposed to do and Zac put it in the back of the net.”View more articles in:
