Musicfest To Benefit Regatta

CELINA — Area residents can enjoy nine hours of music this weekend while helping contribute to next year’s Governor’s Cup Regatta.

After having to cancel this year’s race because of low lake levels, regatta organizers put together a music festival to raise money for next year’s event. The Governor’s Cup Regatta Musicfest will kick off at 3 p.m. Saturday at Lake Shore Park in Celina.

“We’ll open with Erastus, and they’ll play about a two-hour set, and then Mo Blues will play for two or three hours,” Governor’s Cup Regatta President Allen Baskett told The Evening Leader. “Our headliner, Country Mile, will play until midnight.”

In addition to a day of music, a selection of boats will also be on display at Musicfest.

“Formula Boats out of Decatur, Ind., will have some boats on display,” Baskett said.

The Lake Restoration Commission will also be on hand at the event.

“The Lake Restoration Commission will have a booth, and they’ll be passing out information about the lake,” Baskett said. “There will be some door prizes.”

Admission to Musicfest is free, and food and refreshments will be available.

“We’re going to have a beer tent and we’ll also have concessions,” Baskett said.

Baskett noted that pets and carry-ins are not permitted at Musicfest.

“Just bring a lawn chair,” he said. “We ask that you leave the coolers and pets at home and come out and enjoy the music.”

This year will be the second time organizers have held Musicfest, the first coming after the Governor’s Cup Regatta was canceled two years ago because of toxic algae blooms in Grand Lake St. Marys. Baskett said the first Musicfest raised approximately $5,000.

“Two years ago, we raised about $5,000 that we then donated to the lake restoration group,” he said. “This year, all the proceeds will go toward the 2013 regatta.”

With weather forecast to be sunny with a high of 91 degrees, Baskett said he hopes to see the community out at Musicfest having a good time.

“It looks like the weather is going to be great,” he said. “We hope people will come out and support the regatta so we can bring it back in 2013.”
