Music Fest Meant To Lift Spirits

ST. MARYS —  Grace United Methodist Church will ring in the new year with its Winter Christian Music Festival, which will take place at 7 p.m. Jan. 12 at Grace United Methodist Church, at the corner of Pine and Columbia Streets in St. Marys.

Organized by head of the church council Bruce Beener, the event is still in its infancy.

He planned the event for later in the year last year, but decided that January was the perfect time to try to lift people’s spirits with uplifting music during a month which can sometimes be gloomy and cold, and often unexciting after the fun-filled holiday.

He said he has no trouble coming up with singers to participate in the festival.

“I don’t have to go 500 or 1,000 miles to find Christian singers because they’re all over the county,” he said.

Their styles range from traditional to contemporary, he said, so there is something for everyone’s musical tastes.

Laura Puschel will be master of ceremonies.

The event will feature many local Christian singers, including Puschel of Celina, Breanna Romer of St. Henry, Hanna Felver of St. Marys, Kim Gardner of Rockford and Brenda Kelly of New Knoxville. Some have piano background, he said, and he has planned for guitarists to come in to do background music as well.

The event is free, but there will be a free will offering, all of which will be donated to the musicians and singers.

Refreshments will be served during the break.

Beener said turnout for the past festivals was great, and he hopes people come out to support the singers and to enjoy the music.
