Monday Sports Round-Up and Leader Lookahead

Girls Soccer: St. Marys 1, Wapakoneta 1

Missed opportunities early came back to bite the St. Marys girls soccer team late in a 1-1 tie with Wapakoneta, narrowing the margin for error in the Roughriders’ run at repeating as Western Buckeye League champs.

St. Marys couldn’t convert on its numerous shots on goal and then when it finally cracked the scoreboard, the Riders gave up a 1-0 lead with about five minutes left in the match, leading to the 1-1 draw with the Redskins on Monday night at West Field.

“We shot and shot and shot and didn’t finish,” St. Marys head coach Paul Dingledine said. “We crossed the ball and didn’t finish. The girls on the bench were talking about just missing it. Just about doesn’t do it. Until you put it into the back of the net, it’s going to be a heartbreak.”

St. Marys outshot Wapak 20-4.

After almost 73 minutes of scoreless soccer, St. Marys and Wapakoneta each scored a goal in the game’s final seven minutes.

St. Marys took a 1-0 lead with 7:07 left in the match when defender Hannah Yaney kicked in a liner to the left side of the net to break the scoreless tie.

Less than three minutes later, Wapakoneta stormed back down the field and tied the game with a Justine Watercutter ground kick past a diving keeper to the right side of the net at the 4:43 mark.

Girls Tennis: St. Marys 4, Bluffton 1

The St. Marys girls tennis team segued into Thursday’s Western Buckeye League championship meet nicely with a 4-1 win over Bluffton on Monday.

St. Marys improved to  11-4 and 7-2 in WBL with the win.

St. Marys’ Mariah Krugh won first singles over Ashlin Gable, 6-2, 6-0.

Alex Spencer of St. Marys won a three-set match over Emily Sprague, 6-1, 4-6, 6-2, at second singles.

Kristi Geiser of Bluffton won third singles 6-1, 6-3, over St. Marys’ Katie Peterson.

The St. Marys first doubles duo of Allie Zimmerman and Priscilla Dodson downed Bluffton’s Shannon Koch and Shaye Ziddick of Bluffton in three sets, 6-3, 5-7, 6-2.

St. Marys’ Emily Brown and Katie Klingshirn won second doubles 6-4, 6-2, over  Rachel Shehlhorst and Bronwyn Greer of Bluffton.


Volleyball: Wapak 3, Indian Lake 1

Wapakoneta earned a 25-18, 25-13, 19-25, 25-18 win over Indian Lake on Monday. Krissy Steinbaugh and Morgan Quellhorst led Wapak with 12 kills apiece.

Volleyball:New Knoxville 3, Jackson Center 2

For the third straight match the New Knoxville Rangers had to go five sets in a volleyball match. Monday evening the Rangers came on strong in the fifth set to defeat the Jackson Center Tigers 21-25, 25-18, 25-18, 28-30 and 15-7 in a non-league match played at New Knoxville.

In the JV match Jackson Center won 25-19 and 25-16.

The Rangers (7-6) entertain Marion Local on Thursday at 5:30 p.m.
