WAPAKONETA — The top four teams in the Western Buckeye League boys soccer race all had a chance to take a big step towards a league title with a win on Monday night when St. Marys played at Wapakoneta and Celina faced off with Shawnee.

Instead a pair of ties has St. Marys still in control of its own destiny.

St. Marys and Wapakoneta played to a 0-0 tie at Ryan Field on Monday night, leaving St. Marys in the driver’s seat for its first-ever outright championship.

St. Marys at 5-0-2 in league league play still controls its own destiny in the  race after Celina and Shawnee tied 1-1 on Monday night. Shawnee is 5-1-1 in the WBL. Wapakoneta slipped to 4-0-3. Celina is 4-1-2.

“We don’t need any help,” St. Marys head coach Dave Ring said. “If we beat O-G and we beat Van Wert, it’s ours.”

Roughrider goalkeeper Stuart Yahl shut out the Redskins as St. Marys blanked their fifth straight opponent. The Riders have now shut out eight teams in 2013 and given up just seven goals all season.

Keeping the pressure on Lageman got his second goal when he put a shot past Gray with 9:40 left to extend the lead to 2-0.
