ST. MARYS — Carter Bowman asked his teammates if they wanted to play another nine after the St. Marys golf team’s match against Wapakoneta.
After tying a season-best 34, the St. Marys sophomore wanted to keep the round going.
Bowman shot a 34 and the Riders’ second-position player Colin Burke fired a one-over par 37 to lead the Roughriders.
Wapakoneta’s depth shined through in a 157-165 win over St. Marys while Roughrider sophomores Bowman and Burke combined to shot one-under par for the Riders. Bowman, who also shot a 34 at Hawthorne earlier this season, made hey in the first half of the holes on the front nine at Northmoor.
“On the first five holes you really have to do well because these last four holes will get you,” Bowman said.
Bowman bogeyed the seventh and eighth holes, but he responded on the par 3 ninth with a tee shot within 10 feet and drained the putt for the two-under 34.
“That was a good birdie,” Bowman said.
Bowman said the key to scoring well at the Riders’ home course is in the tee box.
“If you hit fairways and greens, you can make putts here,” he said. “You just have to know what club to take off the tee here.”
Colin Burke had to go against the scoring grain of the front nine at Northmoor. He closed the final tough holes at two-under par.Burke’s round got off to an inauspicious when he double bogeyed the opening hole, but he turned it around to shoot his 37.
“Colin kind of had the round of day because he started off with a double bogey on the first and turned it around,” St. Marys head coach Scott Ross said. “That was fun to watch.”
“I started off bad,” Burke said. “I just tried to settle down and put a good round together.”
Wapakoneta earned the win by putting together four solid scores.Redskin ace Caleb Acheson shot a 37. Bobby Crow fired a 39, Drew Wayman had a 40 and Josh Apple shot a 41.
St. Marys’ Kyle Kiefer had a 45, while Stephen Axe and Matt Severt each shot 49s.
