St. Marys' Jason Freewalt won his second singles match against Sidney Lehman Catholic on Monday night.

SIDNEY — The St. Marys boys tennis team fell in its season-opening match to Sidney Lehman Catholic 4-1 on Monday night.

St. Marys picked up its one win at second singles from Jason Freewalt, who downed Sam Dean 6-4, 5-7, 6-2.

The Cavaliers took the other four matches. Lehman Catholic’s Pierce Bennett defeated St. Marys’ Cole Brooks at first singles, 6-1, 6-0. At third singles, Lehman’s Josh West defeated St. Marys’ Nick Rohr, 6-4, 6-4.

The Cavaliers won both doubles matches. Lehman Catholic’s Noah Dunn and Mitch Shroyer won first doubles over the Roughriders’ Kevin Dammeyer and Zac Nelson, 6-1, 6-2. At second doubles, Louis Gaier and Riley Pickrel defeated St. Marys’ Justin Nedderman and Noah Hartsock, 6-3, 6-1.

St. Marys hosts Bluffton tonight in the first home match of the season at 4:30 p.m.

BASEBALL

COVINGTON 8, NEW KNOXVILLE 3: Covington picked up an 8-3 win over New Knoxville on Monday night. Jake Allen pitched for the Rangers and struck out eight while taking the loss. Allen also doubled at the plate for the Rangers. Covington improves to 2-0 on the season. The Rangers are 0-1 and  go to Waynefield-Goshen tonight for a 5 p.m. first pitch followed by a trip to Jackson Center on Saturday at 10 a.m.

BRADFORD 21, NEW BREMEN 0: Bradford scored in all five innings to pick up a 21-0 win over New Bremen on Monday night in a season-opener for both teams.
The game was moved to Bradford after originally being scheduled to be played in New Bremen. Bradford took advantage of five New Bremen errors. New Bremen starting pitcher Clay Bertke gave up five runs and took the loss, but none of the runs he gave up were earned. Bertke struck out six in his two innings of work and he gave up two hits and two walks. Austin Leer threw five innings of three-hit, shutout baseball to earn the win on the hill for the Railroaders. New Bremen (0-1) continues in non-conference play tonight when it goes to Lima Shawnee tonight at 5 p.m. The was originally scheduled to be a New Bremen home game.

CELINA 2, FORT RECOVERY 1: The Celina baseball team pushed a run across in the top of the ninth inning to pull out a 2-1 win at Fort Recovery on Monday night. Fort Recovery grabbed an early 1-0 lead before Celina responded with single runs in the fifth and ninth innings. Celina had four doubles in the game from Kaleb Kuhn, Shawn Stachler, Damon Smith and Arik Fickert. Celina travels to Marion Local tonight at 5 p.m.
