ST. MARYS — The St. Marys girls soccer team played the match head coach Paul Dingledine has been hoping for, with crisp passing, strong finishes for goals and a shutout from his defense to close out the home portion of the Roughriders’ schedule.
Bela Godinho and Bailey Gottschalk scored goals as St. Marys shut out Fort Jennings for a 2-0 win on Monday at Roughrider Field.
“We just connected so much more on passes and went from there instead of going from defenders to forwards,” Dingledine said. “They just played so much better tonight.”
It had been more than a week since the Roughriders had captured their last victory, a win over Wapakoneta on Sept. 26. The Roughriders tied Ottawa-Glandorf last Tuesday and lost to Lima Central Catholic 1-0 on Saturday. St. Marys bounced back with an effort that had Dingledine pleased as the regular season winds down and tournament play approaches.
The Roughriders improved to 8-4-2 overall.
St. Marys travels to Van Wert tonight for a 5 p.m. varsity-only match in Western Buckeye League play. St. Marys looks to improve on its 6-1-1 WBL record.
NEW KNOXVILLE 3, LINCOLNVIEW 0
NEW KNOXVILLE – With great front line play and excellent serving the New Knoxville Rangers made short work of the Lincolnview Lancers Monday evening 25-8, 25-11 and 25-9 in a non-league match played at New Knoxville.
Madison Lammers led the Rangers with eight kills while Meg Reineke and Haley Horstman each added seven kills.
“The front line played pretty strong tonight,” Rangers head coach Jill Roode said. “Jenna (Schwieterman) blocked very well after taking over that position and we were reading the ball well.”
Rachel Leffel served up a game-high five aces. Reineke had 11 assists, 10 digs and three aces to go with her seven kills. Kenzie Schroer had three kills, three blocks, two assists and five digs. Haley Horstman had eight assists, 12 digs and three blocks to go with her seven kills. Abby Rohrbach added 13 digs. Kalyn Schrer had eight digs. Jenna Schwieterman had two kills and a block.
In the JV match New Knoxville won 25-12 and 25-11.
New Knoxville (13-7) will entertain Marion Local tonight for Senior Night before ending the regular season at Fort Recovery on Thursday.
BELLEFONTAINE 2, NEW KNOXVILLE 0
BELLEFONTAINE — Nick Heydinger and Matt Baughman scored goals and Belleftontaine earned a 2-0 win over the New Knoxville boys soccer team on Monday.
New Knoxville goalkeeper Dean Frankenberg made seven saves.
The Chieftans outshot the Rangers 11-5
New Knoxville is 3-8-2 on the season. The Rangers will travel to Ottoville on Friday for a 6 p.m. match to end the regular season. New Knoxville then will open tournament play on Tuesday, Oct. 15 against Lima Temple Christian in a sectional final at Lima Stadium at 7:30 p.m. The winner of that match plays the winner of Kalida vs. Continental/Fort Jennings in a district semifinal at Kalida on Tuesday, Oct. 22 at 5 p.m.
New Knoxville beat Lima Temple Christian 5-2 in the regular season.
