Minster shuts out Newton, 7-0

MINSTER — The Minster softball team scored five runs in the bottom of the first inning and cruised to a 7-0 win over Newton on Wednesday.

Minster’s Kayla Richard went 4 for 4 with a home run and a triple and pitched a two-hit shutout. Richard struck out four and didn’t walk a batter in Minster’s eighth win of the season. Richard now is hitting  .581 on the season with16 runs batted in and seven extra-base hits. She improved to 6-1 in the pitcher’s circle with a 1.02 earned run average and 44 strikeouts in 55 innings pitched.

The Wildcats’ Michaela Goettemoeller homered and went 2 for 3 with an RBI for 12-hit Minster offensive attack.

Nicole Brandewie drove in two runs with a double.  Sara Hosey went 2 for 3 and collected her 11th RBI of the spring. Regan Hahn bumped her averaged up to .481 with a  2 for 3 game and drove in her ninth run of the campaign. Rachel Heckaman, who is hitting .393, singled and drove in her tenth run.

Minster is now hitting .390 as a team through the first nine games of the season.

After jumping out to the 5-0 lead in the first, Minster added single runs in the third and fourth innings.

Minster added the game against Newton after weather had made for a spotty schedule over the first three weeks of the spring season. The Wildcats (8-1) will travel to Fort Recovery on Thursday at 5 p.m.
