NEW BREMEN — The New Bremen Cardinals just couldn’t keep the Minster Wildcats in check and with a touchdown in each quarter the Wildcats defeated rival New Bremen 27-7 in front of a homecoming crowd at New Bremen.

“I thought we had opportunities on the field tonight to put them away and we didn’t get it done,” Minster head coach Nate Moore said. “The kids are a little disappointed that they didn’t put more points on the board, but New Bremen is a good team and had a good game plan.”

Minster did take advantage early as the first two possessions of the game for New Bremen ended in interceptions. The first interception was at the 43 and Troy Kauffman ran the ball back to the Cardinal 11 yard line. Following a six-yard run by Korey Schultz, he finished the job with a five-yard touchdown run. Devon Poeppelman kicked the extra point giving Minster a 7-0 lead with 7:16 left.

“Our effort was there tonight,” Cardinals head coach Rob Messick said. “I thought defensively it was one of the best games that we played. We got a couple turnovers and stopped them on downs a couple times.”

Three plays after the kickoff Elliott Westerbeck again threw a ball to the wrong color as Jay Eilerman picked off a pass with 6:07 left. Starting at the Cardinal 36 the Wildcats drove down to eight by the drive stalled and Poeppelman missed a 25-yard field goal attempt with 4:28 left.

After an exchange of possessions, New Bremen drove down to the Minster 23 as the second quarter started. They got the ball down to the 18 where they faced second, third and fourth down and one and the Minster defense stood their ground stopping New Bremen. Some controversy occurred when the officials failed to do a measurement on fourth down.

“They moved the chains too soon,” Messick said. “We wanted a measurement but they had already moved the chains the other way.”

The Wildcats made it out to the New Bremen 40 but they were stopped on fourth and one with eight minutes left.

Once again New Bremen got the ball into Minster territory but they were stopped on fourth and eight with 4:20 left. Minster took the ball and moved the ball 62 yards in nine plays with Adam Niemeyer completing a seven-yard touchdown pass to Dan Gusching. The extra point kick made the score 14-0 with one minute left in the first half.

“One thing we are happy about are that the kids are playing hard,” Moore said. “They are hitting people. We need to get a little better on offense as far as execution and we need to be more disciplined on defense.”

“Dan Gusching had a real nice game,” Moore said. “I thought he had a real nice game on offense and defense.”

“He is a good player,” Messick said. “We couldn’t block him all night and they have a real nice defense. We were able to do a couple things that we wanted to do, but we made too many mistakes.”

Gusching had 79 yards on eight catches.

New Bremen wasted little time in the second half getting on the board. Taking the second half kickoff they went 60-yards down the field including a 44-yard run by Aaron Clune and Westerbeck scored the touchdown on a one-yard run. The kick by Clune made the score 14-7 with 9:05 left in the third quarter.

Minster answered right back going 52 yards in 10 plays with Kauffman scoring on a two-yard touchdown run. The kick was no good giving Minster a 20-7 lead with 5:05 left.

The Wildcats concluded the scoring in the fourth quarter on Westerbecks’ third interception throw as Jay Eilerman intercepted a pass at the Cardinals nine and Schultz went in for the touchdown on the next play. The kick made the final score 27-7.

“The defensive backs were playing aggressively,” Moore said. “We wanted to get up in their face and be physical with them and I thought for the most part it worked.”

The Wildcats (3-2) entertain Fort Recovery next Friday, while New Bremen (0-5) travels to Anna.
