Merlin W. Blumhorst, 99

Merlin W. Blumhorst, 99, of New Bremen, died at 11:35 a.m. Monday, Dec. 3, 2012, at the St. Marys Living Center in St. Marys.  

He was born on Oct. 15, 1913, near Kettlersville.  

He was the son of William and Bertha (May) Blumhorst.  

On June 8, 1946, he married Eldine Bertke, who survives in St. Marys.  Also surviving is his son, William (Karen) Blumhorst of New Bremen; grandchildren Justin (Tiffany) Blumhorst of Sidney and Katie (Dan Sok) Blumhorst of Dayton; and his great-granddaughter Whitley Blumhorst.  Preceding him in death were his sisters, Luella Topp and Helen Schrolucke.

Mr. Blumhorst was a member of the St. Paul United Church of Christ in New Bremen.  He enjoyed playing cards, polka dances, attending sporting events, woodworking, gardening and loved to fish with his family.  

He was engaged in farming, had owned a butcher shop and retired from the Minster Machine Company after 25 years of service where he had worked in the pattern shop.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at the Gilberg-Hartwig Funeral Home in New Bremen, the Rev. Becky Erb Strang officiating.  

Burial will follow in the German Protestant Cemetery, New Bremen.  Calling hours will be from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.  

Memorial contributions may be made to the Grand Lake Hospice or to the church memorial fund.
